On 25 June 2025, at the 110th session of the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization, the presentation of the European Union technical assistance Twinning project “Institutional Support to the State Service for Maritime, Inland Waterway Transport and Shipping of Ukraine in the Implementation of the EU Acquis, Maritime Safety Regulations and Standards” took place.
Diplomatic missions of the Italian Republic and Ukraine jointly organized the event at the IMO headquarters in London, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Italian Coast Guard representatives that are in charge of the project implementation, together with Ukrainian partners from the Shipping Administration, addressed delegations of IMO Member States and international organizations concerned.
The presentation covered the following aspects:
- thematic scope of the Twinning project designed to develop Ukraine’s capacity to fulfill its obligations as a flag, port and coastal state;
- information on Italian government agencies and academic institutions involved in the technical assistance provision;
- methodology and organization of the project activities;
- pathways for bringing Ukrainian legislation in the field of maritime transport and shipping closer to European standards.
The Italian side highlighted the contribution of the Twinning project to strengthening the safety and security of ships and their crews in the maritime search and rescue region of Ukraine, Ukrainian seaports and shipping lanes, such as the special maritime corridor.
We extend our gratitude to the Italian Coast Guard for the initiative, as well as to the IMO Secretariat and the Embassies of the Italian Republic and Ukraine in London for the opportunity to showcase bilateral technical cooperation at the high international level.
