Representatives of the Shipping Administration, together with the Italian Coast Guard – Twinning Project partners and hosts of the Coast Guard Global Summit – participated in a panel discussion on cooperation in the field of maritime safety and security.
Mykola Kravchuk, Head of the State Service for Maritime, Inland Waterway Transport and Shipping of Ukraine, delivered the presentation “Italian-Ukrainian Partnership for a Resilient Maritime Tomorrow”, in which he informed representatives from more than a hundred countries of the current working conditions for Ukraine’s maritime sector amid russia’s full-scale invasion. The address outlined key areas of activity of state institutions in the field of maritime and inland waterway transport, together contributing to repulse of the aggression and further development of the shipping industry in Ukraine.
The delegation of the Shipping Administration drew attention to results of the two years operation of the Special Maritime Corridor in the Black Sea, which demonstrates Ukraine’s further performance of its obligations as a port and coastal state, as well as contributes to food security worldwide. It also urged to promote just elections to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and not to support russia’s nomination in Category A.
Such achievements are made possible through international cooperation, in particular the European Union technical assistance Twinning Project “Institutional Support to the State Service for Maritime, Inland Waterway Transport and Shipping of Ukraine in the Implementation of the EU Acquis, Norms and Standards on Maritime Safety”. Presentation of the Twinning Project at the international level reaffirmed that comprehensive partnership with Italy is an important contribution to strengthening the resilience of the Ukrainian maritime industry.
Furthermore, the Summit is a perfect platform to discuss global topical issues of the maritime industry, such as application of emerging technologies in maritime governance and countering pollution of the Ocean.
The event brought together leaders and senior officials of coast guard authorities from all over the world, as well as dignitaries – Mrs. Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic, Mr. Arsenio Domínguez, IMO Secretary-General, and Dr. Costas Kadis, European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans.
The Shipping Administration extends gratitude to the Italian side for invitation and organisation of the Summit in cooperation with the Japan Coast Guard which promotes this discussion forum since 2017.
